We are all motivated in some form or fashion by something or the other. What motivates you to get up and go to work in the mornings? Is it the bills you know need to be paid? What motivates you to raise your children to respect adults? Is it because they’ve embarrassed you more than once answering, “Yeah” or “Nah”?
Physical exercise is no different. What is your motivation? Is it that little black dress? Is it that vacation that requires a bathing suit to be donned? I’ve recently been motivated to get back to a regular workout routine. It is my desire to not kill myself on a ski trip that my husband planned for my 40th birthday. I mean, I truly do not want to hurt myself. I’ve never been skiing but I do know that it takes a lot of core and lower body strength to execute it correctly. That’s my motivation. Whatever it takes, right?
So, what does it take to become spiritually motivated? Are you like me and wake up one morning aware that, “I’m not quite where I used to be in my walk with God” or “Wow, I just realized I haven’t cracked my Bible in over a week”? What motivated you in the first place to enter into a relationship with Christ? Go back there and dwell for a while. Often looking back can give us insight into what lies ahead. It can boost our morale and create incentive.
Remember earlier in the week we looked at a passage in Romans 12. This is how the entire passage reads:
In His grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. (12:6-8)If eternal life is not enough motivation for spiritual excellence maybe you can be inspired by the specific duty He’s called you to. If you’re His, He’s called you. Figure it out and get to it.
By Grace Alone,
Tracey
