Spiritual Obesity: That’s what friends are for

That’s what friends are for.

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
Proverbs 27:17

I’ve been exercising regularly for quite a few years now. I’ve done the videos, the gym membership, the group classes, the personal trainer, and the home gym to name a few. My favorite way to get in shape is with a friend. I mean a true friend, one who knows my weaknesses and strengths, my moods, and my sense of humor. We encourage each other, push each other to excel, and even tease each other. My work out partner is dependable and I enjoy motivating her as much as she enjoys motivating me.

During our spiritual growth we need external motivation. Women need strong  relationships with other women. What’s even more motivating is that God encourages it. We are called first to love God with our entire being and then to love others. This love requires movement and effort. 1 John 3:18 says let us not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.

Whether we are spurring one another on to good works, encouraging prayer and quiet times (James 5:16), or speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) both parties benefit. When I’m at my lowest or weakest I know there are a few select people that I can depend on to lift my spirit and get me over the “hurdle of the day” and God has placed certain people in my life with whom He’s knitted my heart as well. When they hurt I hurt. When they are struggling I do everything in my power to help them over their “hurdle of the day”. Do you have a friend or two like that? They are essential in our spiritual growth. If you do, call them today and give a word of encouragement. If you don’t, pray that God will bring someone into your life. Here’s the catch, it may require your letting down your guard and allowing someone in. Remember, the best way to have a friend is to be one.
